Yep, being an Abyssal is a raw deal unless someone deals with the whole Monstrance of Celestial Portion soul-jar issue. Even if someone manages that once, they’re not going to let you get away scot-free.
I mean not really, but it has been stated multiple times, that despite what the Deathlords say to the contrary, the most they can do with your Monstrance is maybe scry your current location and even that seems hazy at best.
The Monstrance is more like a hack job to contain and anchor the spark and to allow a transferal process to take the place of exaltation. That is why the only real requirement to be an abyssal is to die as opposed to the heroics that the others require. Although iirc the process works best if you died in a failed act of heroism.
However if you are aiming at redemption you would need to destroy your monstrance to be able to purify your spark. But if you don’t mind being murderbot 9000 but just don’t want a boss, ain’t shit they can do to you other than hunt you down.
The answer I got from my storyteller about the matter is that redemption is a theoretical possibility the neverborn allow to be known so they can track interest in it to find their disloyalty problems. Also, that stealing or breaking your monstrance just means it’ll get seized or remade into the care of a different deathlord. Something, something, Unconquered Sun too busy playing WoW (games of divinity) to fix the “solar exalts that aren’t solars” problem.
The last time I tried to play the game was back in 1st Ed days however, when the question of whether or not that was true may be different from the 2nd Ed/3rd Ed present.
2nd ed was that it is unequivocally true, redeeming from an abyssal to a solar was impossible, so a basic Tuesday for a celestial exalt. No one has ever done it, no one knows how to do it. We have rules for the aftermath, and some ideas how to begin the path, but after that all info is purposely vague to useless.
As for a monstarnce if you blow it up the Deathlords tell you you will die,in reality you have just made the first free abyssal spark and who knows what happens if you die without being tethered to a Monstrance. (My money is you gave Lytek a shitty day at work)
As for 3rd, I haven’t really delved into that game yet, because 1 it’s fucking wierd, and 2 I don’t have enough source material to properly DM it yet.
Heh, Lytek would have a lot of fun trying to figure out how to handle that. I’d imagine even just dealing with regular solar exaltations is a three martini lunch situation.
I’ve been amused in the past by the idea of Lytek exalting someone to serve as his co-technician, to help with difficult cases, do out-call maintenance, and manage recalls and replacements on outstanding exaltations for him. Something like a maintenance specialized plumber that drives up in a white van full of tools to service your soul. This is what someone else came up with when I asked if it was possible for someone who started with a dawn caste to switch to being a night caste solar. It wouldn’t be any crazier than most of the rest of the setting, eh?

that’s fake news

That sounds like the best excuse for an Exigent of Lytek ever. I am going to make this character now.
